Flashback: advertisement controversy

A long long time ago (back in 2004), there was a controversy over a Pepsi ad featuring ‘child labour’. I just thought about it because this site featured the video ad on their site. The two news articles featuring this controversy are here and here. Another opinion piece is found here (you have to scroll down to access this article).
My personal view is that while I don’t find that advertisement offensive… I still feel that advertisers are getting paid enough that they should have done better to avoid such negative publicity and also insensitivity to public volatility. Ultimately, regardless of the ‘reaction’ or ‘overreaction’ it was the companies (Pepsi and the Ad agency) that should have taken responsibility and faced the music.

Passage for this Season

Philippians 2:11-13 (NIV) (12)Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, (13)for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
