Late Night New Year’s Service

On New Year’s Eve we attended a service that started at 11:30pm and went on till 1:45am! In fact, it was all the more disturbing because I thought it was a one-hour service, but it just went on and on.

We had special songs, chorus singing, offering (obviously), hymns, and even a communion service. Plus we had two sermons, one before and one after the 12:00am point!

Add to this the liturgy… for each event that were some liturgical reading/procedure that needed to be followed to rightly lead-up and exit. Thus, what could have easily take two minutes, would take six times the amount of time!

I complained about this to my mother, when she asked how was my New Year’s celebration. And instead of sympathy, she said, “good” and she added, “in our days, the church service would go on till 5:00am!” Hmmm. In comparison, 1:45am… doesn’t look so bad, I guess.

But it must be said that the service was packed… and most people patiently waited through the service.

I guess some people like long services!

Passage for this Season

Philippians 2:11-13 (NIV) (12)Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, (13)for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
